The Process is Simple

I have created an outline of what the proofreading process looks like. This is to better enable both of us to collaborate and communicate our expectations.

Contact.

You can contact me at the link on my website to discuss the projects you need assistance with.

Rates.

Proofreading Fee: $0.02-$0.025 per word.

Review.

You will send me a copy of the manuscript you’d like me to proofread. I will review the information to determine the amount of time it will take me to finish the work and the total cost. The standard word count per page is 250. I am happy to provide you with a sample edit of ten percent of the entire document so you are able to determine if my work will perfectly match your needs.

Agreement.

If we decide to move forward, I will create a contract that will outline the outcomes that both of us are expecting.

Proofreading.

I will then complete my assessment of the work, making suggestions for edits using Google Docs or Track Changes on MS Word.

Your review.

I will send you a copy of the work with my suggestions for your review. You are free to accept or decline any of my suggestions. After all, this is YOUR work and you must be happy with the final outcome.

Final review.

You can return the item for me to take a final look through. When I return this version, it will be the final approved project. You are ready for the next step on your journey to publication.

Additional Information:

Once we have come to our working agreement, I will require a 50% deposit, paid through PayPal, before I begin work and to reserve a place on my calendar. The completed work will be returned to you only after you have submitted the balance of the total payment we have agreed upon.

Per industry standard, I will be making suggested edits using Track Changes on MS Word or Google Docs. Please let me know if you have questions or a preference for either one.

I use the
Chicago Manual of Style as my main reference for suggested edits. I am also familiar with AP style. You are welcome to provide me with style sheets specifically designed for your work.

My primary focus is to make suggested edits regarding errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. This is my area of expertise and anything beyond the scope of these types of suggestions will require a more extensive contract.

About Me

My name is Kerry Backes. I am relatively new to the business of proofreading, however I have many years of experience in writing and editing under my belt. I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 1993 with a Bachelor of Individualized Studies. The three areas I focused on with this degree were Spanish, Social-Psychology, and Business. In the late 1990s, I pursued a career in education. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 2001, with an emphasis on grades K-8, including middle school-level social studies. I went on to earn additional certificates and teaching licenses in special education, specifically in the areas of learning disabilities and emotional and behavioral disorders. Needless to say there has been an abundance of writing and editing opportunities available to me throughout my career.

My husband and I reside in central Minnesota with our daughter, Grace. Much of our time is dedicated to pampering our dog, four cats, fourteen chickens, sixteen rabbits, and three horses. I am very passionate about reading and listening to a variety of books, magazines and just about any type of printed material you can imagine. And I can’t help but be distracted by any grammatical error I discover. This, of course, is what led me to the glamorous world of proofreading. I can’t wait to dig in to your material!
